The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), Lagos State council has asked the state government to increase workers’ minimum wage to N56,000 to meet the high cost of living in the state.
The Chairman of the congress, Francis Ogunremi, said this yesterday at the May Day celebration tagged “Labour Relations in Economic Recession: An Appraisal” at Agege Stadium, Agege, Lagos.
The chairman who noted that though the Federal Government has set up a committee including the labour centres to review the minimum wage, he urged Lagos State Governor Akinwumi Ambode to take the giant step urgently as recession is eating deep into the finances of workers.
He said: “Lagos remains the only state that we know remit workers pensions to their PFAs of choice as at when due. However, it is no news that in the face of current economic realities, the minimum wage can no longer take our members home.
“Although the Federal Government has set up a committee including the labour centres to review the minimum wage, we are indeed proposing N56,000 as minimum wage to you for consideration in Lagos.”
The Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Lagos State Council, Idowu Adelakun, tasked labour movement to create investment opportunities where workers can become employers, rather than remain permanent employees.
Meanwhile, Governor Ambode has urged workers and the leadership of organised labour to rededicate themselves to values that ensure industrial harmony and economic resilience in the country.
The governor said this while delivering a speech titled: “Celebrating the workers oiling the progress of Lagos State” at this year’s 2017 May Day celebration at Agege Stadium.
Ambode disclosed that his administration would soon employ more teachers before the end of the year. Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, also congratulated workers on May Day celebration.
Obasa, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Musbau Razak, said Nigerian workers deserve to be commended for their perseverance, diligence and cooperation with government at all levels.
