A member of the House of Representatives, Nicholas Ossai yesterday urged Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo to take decisive action against armed herdsmen responsible for the death of hundreds of Nigerians.
Ossai, who represents Ndokwa federal constituency in Delta State said the Acting President requires strong political will to make a difference in efforts to tackle the menace of killer herdsmen in the country.
The lawmaker, who sponsored a motion calling on the authorities to probe the recent attacks on Ossissa community in Delta State by herdsmen, reiterated his call on the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to double efforts to protect people in the trouble area.
He, however, said the difficulties faced by security agents while trying to tackle the menace reinforces the need for the devolution of power to enable the creation of state police who would have easy access to the grassroots to arrest criminals.
He commended Delta Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa for his resolve to explore dialogue and peaceable means of addressing the crisis created by herdsmen in the state.
Ossai asked other governors in the country to follow their counterparts in Benue and Ekiti states by enacting laws to ban cattle grazing in their domain. Meanwhile, a group, Tiv Diaspora Forum has accused the Federal Government of silence and not taking drastic steps over the incessant killing of farmers by Fulani herdsmen in Benue State.
It also condemned the provocative utterances directed at Tiv people by representatives of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association (MACBAN) where it issued a threat against the indigenous Tiv in Nasarawa in connection with a recent bill passed by the Benue House of Assembly.
A statement by Prof. Joseph T. Zume (USA), Son Kai Gyoh (Ireland), Mr. Kuram Gwakyaa (United Kingdom) and Amom Tor-Anyiin (Canada) said Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the state continued to suffer without any assistance from the Federal Government.
