United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), has charged students across the country to live in peace and harmony with one another, saying this is one sure way of moving the country forward.

President, Youth Orientation for Development, a non-governmental organisation affiliated to UNESCO, Mr. Emmanuel Ejiogu, who addressed a group of students at the 2017 UNESCO World Day for Cultural diversity for dialogue and development, said the essence of the day was to sensitise youths on the value of peace and the need to eschew violence in their relationship with one another.
He explained that the event titled, “Importance of Cultural diversity for sustainable development,” and organised in collaboration with the national troupe of Nigeria was targeted at the students because they are often used as objects of violence in the country.
“Today, as the United Nations marks the cultural diversity day, the youths have to be involved to channel their minds towards peace and non-violence. If we get it right with our youths, then the nation is on the path to achieving sustainable development.”
Also, the national director, dance troupe of Nigeria, Dr. Arnold Udoka, stressed the importance of cultural diversity to sustainable development and called on parents to educate their children about our differences and our similarities as a nation.
He stated that the earlier we allow our children to understand that diversity exists in Nigeria and learn to live with one another, the better for the future of this country.
“As a nation, we will always be here with diverse cultures, we do not need to fight or quarrel with one another. Cultural diversity is something that we will harness for the development of our country. The future of this country is in the hands of the children; the earlier we teach them the differences and similarities and why there must be unity in our diversity, the better for the future of this country,” Udoka stated.
